Product Manager

Full time

Salary £45-60k pa dependent on experience

London, minimum 2 days per week in the office

About us

Overton is a socially conscious startup focused on making government policy more transparent: we help researchers, journalists and the public to see the evidence and influences behind real world guidelines, laws and regulations.

Want to see the research behind national climate change plans, or the influences pushing different COVID policies? Overton is where you go.

Our customers range from UN & EU agencies to think tanks, big charities and dozens of universities. Our primary product is a large, searchable database of government policy that we text mine to pull out topics, links to academic papers, people and more.

The founding team is experienced, friendly and genuinely cares about the space – we’d love you to join us.

Your new role

We’re looking to hire an enthusiastic and talented product manager to help us accelerate our product development and take ownership of our new feature pipeline.

You’ll take responsibility for collecting and collating user requirements and feedback and translating this into technical tasks, working closely with the technical team – which currently includes Euan, our founder, Angel, our data scientist, and Nick, our software engineer.

Day to day you’ll be looking after the existing product, scoping new features, prioritising tickets, and providing project management support. You’ll also play an important role in helping us to scope new product offerings and figuring out how to address new markets, by developing a deep understanding of Overton’s data, tech and skills and applying it to problems faced by users in our current markets as well as new audiences.

You’ll be adept at balancing the needs of different users and understanding how our product decisions support our growth plans. You’ll be working with colleagues across the wider team who engage with users and have specialist market knowledge, to analyse internal and external feedback on how the product is used and perceived and to help bring those ideas into the technical realm.

We deploy daily and you’ll be supporting changes customers can see from day one. Some recent key projects have included:

  • A collaboration with a large medical publisher to help medical schools understand their impact
  • Adding a new ‘people mentions’ feature to the platform which, for example, helps universities see where their academics are giving evidence to Parliament or sitting on expert panels
  • Developing new reporting functionality that brings together visualisations and tables, to give customers a quick, simple and easily shareable way of viewing their data

You’ll be joining us at an exciting stage of development and there’ll be lots of opportunity to try out new ideas, for professional development and to learn about developing a new product inside a start-up environment.

Your responsibilities

  • Gathering feedback from users to ensure that we deliver solutions that solve real problems
  • Manage the product lifecycle, roadmap and prioritisation with our technical team
  • Speaking with colleagues in every area of the business to gain an understanding of the product from all viewpoints
  • Reviewing quantitative and qualitative data to optimise our product
  • Wireframing new product plans
  • Building proposals for new product plans
  • Testing and validating feature work ready for release
  • Keeping track of industry trends and new tools

The tech

Our technology stack is PHP, Python, Postgres and Elasticsearch, with Javascript on the front end. We scrape and process a large number of documents from the web, index them and allow users to search them through our web app.

We don’t expect you to be writing code yourself but it would help if you’re technically minded and familiar with some of these technologies.

About you

  • 3 years+ product management experience, with proven success in delivering products and features from idea to implementation
  • Experience working in a SaaS business
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams to deliver a product on time
  • Experience conducting user research and analysing quantitative and quantitative data
  • Naturally creative with an eye for brilliant design and usability.
  • Experience with agile ways of working
  • Curious and eager to learn about different product management techniques, the wider policy world and our customers
  • A natural collaborator with excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A strong technical understanding of how web applications work and are deployed
  • Smart, passionate, curious and able to learn new things quickly.
  • Super organised
  • Able to work under your own initiative, proactively taking ownership of your areas of work and contributing to discussions and decisions outside your direct remit

And these would be a bonus!

  • A background or experience working in academic publishing, scientific research, think tanks, government, NGOs or IGOs
  • Experience working in a startup environment or within a small technical team
